There were tears of sadness among the South Korean players after they lost the match against Ghana. However, there can be no excitement for the Asians against Portugal on Friday.
They must beat the European champions in 2016. South Korea has managed to beat the “Lusitanians” once again. This happened in 2002 when they beat Portugal for a match that even then was valid for the World Cup and was held in their country, South Korea.
The Koreans are hoping for a win, but also for the result of the next game, Ghana-Uruguay, to go their way.
The most popular striker of the Koreans, Son Heung-min burst into tears after being defeated by Ghana 2-3. Coach Paulo Bento received a red card for arguing with the referee after the latter blew the whistle as his team won a corner.
Against Portugal, Bento will not be on the bench. In his place will be the assistant Sergio Costa, who hopes that the team will move away from disappointments.
“Clearly we deserve a victory. Believe in us for the next game,” said Costa.
South Korea have just one point after drawing with Uruguay in the match against Uruguay. If they are to advance to the next stage, the Koreans must win against Portugal.
20 years ago, South Korea defeated Portugal, disqualifying them from the 1st round of 16. On the other hand, Portugal is expected to go more calmly in this match after securing qualification.
