Hurricane Hermine has hit Spain. As a result of the bad weather, scheduled flights to the Canary Islands have been cancelled. There had been 141 flight cancellations by midday on many of the islands, including 62 from Tenerife North airport, 23 from La Palma, 20 from El Hierro, eight from Lanzarote and four from La Gomera.
The heavy rains have turned the roads into rivers while some roads have been blocked by fallen trees. As a preliminary measure, schools have been ordered to close.
Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, has issued a red weather alert for the islands of Gran Canaria, La Palma and El Hierro. The bad weather is expected to continue on Monday.
