10 highest mountains in the world

We all know what the highest mountain in the world is … But how many of us know what the second or third or fourth highest mountain in the world is? Fame is everything, at least in this materialistic and success-based world we have to live in.

But of course, there is a world of mountains behind Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, and believe it or not the 10 highest mountains in the world are all in Asia . Do we know it?

Mount Everest

Mount Everest is 8,848 meters high and is in the Himalayas, in Tibet , an autonomous region of China. The first Europeans to climb it were Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, in 1953.

Everest has books, photo collections, and even movies. And today there is no shortage of those photos that denounce that its peak has become something like Mecca. And there are so many people lining up to get there it’s scary!

Year after year, in the climbing season, people come from all over the world trying to join, sometimes with success and sometimes not, Base Camp with the summit. Those who don’t make it that far still enjoy the arduous hike back to the camp itself.

Karakoram Mountain

This mount is between Pakistan and China and measures 8,611 meters. It is commonly abbreviated to K2 and is named after the notation used by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of British India. At that time it seems that the mountain did not have a proper name, so that name remained.

Many call this mountain “wild”, and in fact, if you saw the new version of the film Limit Point , it will look familiar to you. The film from the 90s, starring Keanu Reeves, starred some dangerous surfers, but in the remake the surfers become climbers. And that’s where K2 makes its entrance.

It is considered a difficult mountain, difficult to climb , much more than its big sister. It seems that K2 t It has the second level of mortality in terms of climbing among all mountains that are about 800 meters high. 77 deaths are counted in a total of 300 successful ascents to the top.

One more tidbit: the peak was never reached in winter until 2020.

Kangchenjunga

This mountain is within the Himalayas, between Nepal and India, and is 8,586 meters high . Three of its peaks are on the border between the two nations and the other two are within Taplejung District, Nepal.

this was the highest mountain in the world until 1852 and not because the existence or height of Everest was not known, but because the calculations were done wrong. After a new study it was discovered that, in fact, Mount Kangchenjunga was not the highest in the world… if not the third!

Lhotse

Also in the Himalayas, between Nepal and Tibet. It is 8,516 meters high and is really a very famous mountain because it is really close to Mount Everest . The route to the top of Lhotse is the same as the one that climbs Everest, from Everest Base Camp, until it passes through Camp 3, and then goes up the Reiss Corridor from the Lhotse Face, from where the summit is reached.

We can say that Lhotse is something like Everest’s younger brother . It is less attractive and therefore always less crowded. Its main peak was first reached in 1956, while what is known as Lhotse Middle remained unexplored for decades. Finally, it reached its peak in 2011, at the hands of a Russian expedition.

Makalu

This mountain is in the Himalayas, also between Nepal and Tibet, and is 8,485 meters . It is the third mountain that exceeds 8000 meters in the Everest massif, in Nepal. A French expedition reached its peak in 1955 for the first time.

It was quite significant because a total of 10 explorers got up there, when the usual thing at the time was that one or two of the whole group were so lucky.

Cho oyu

It is in the Himalayas, between Nepal and Tibet, and is 8,188 meters . It occupies the sixth position among the highest mountains in the world and is the fourth within the selected group of mountains of 8 thousand meters.

It is a “good” mountain, since despite its height it is one of the easiest to climb . Why Because its slopes are gentle and rise little by little. In addition, it is close to Nang La Pass, a few kilometers from this famous trade route between Tibet and the Khumbu Sherpas.

Dhaulagiri

This mountain is in Nepal and is 8,167 meters . It looks very simple and it was first summited on May 13, 1960. It is very popular within the Annapurna circuit because it looks perfect.

Annapurna circuit is, if you like trekking, the best thing you can do. It is an excellent route in the Himalayas covering 145 kilometers of mountainous landscapes. Cross the Thorong-La Pass, 5,416 meters high, the highest navigable pass in the world, enter the Kali Gandaki Canyon, the deepest in the world, three times deeper than the Grand Canyon …

However, the mountain is isolated, separated from the rest of the world by the same canyon, so the postcard is even more surprising and dominant.

Manaslu

The mountain is in Nepal and reaches 8,163 meters high . Its name comes from the Sanskrit « manasa Â», which means soul or intellect. Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu first attempted to reach their peak on May 9, 1965, in a Japanese expedition.

His burning was not without controversy. It seems that the local people warned the expeditioners not to go to the top of everything because previous attempts had angered the gods and produced avalanches that had killed 18 people…

The expedition donated money to rebuild the crumbled monastery, but still had no luck, and the summit was reached only by a new Japanese expedition, but in 1971.

Nanga Parbat

This high mountain is in Pakistan and is 8,126 meters. It is within Diamer District, Baltisan Gilgit Region, west of the Himalayas. Its name also comes from Sanskrit and means “bare mountain”.

It is a high mountain, surrounded by a green valley s everywhere. Rupal Face is beautiful, with a height of 4,600 meters from its base.

Annapurna II

This mountain is in Nepal and is 8,091 meters . It is one of the most popular mountains in the world and it is precisely because of the trekking circuit we talked about before. It could be in position 10 but unfortunately it has the highest death rate among climbers in the entire list we just ranked.

32% of attempts to reach the peak lead to deaths. What the circuit does is circle the mountain and provide views of Dhaulagiri on Annapurna Massif mountain walks. There are routes to the Annapurna Sanctuary, which is nothing more than Base Camp, to continue climbing its peaks, which are very popular.

So far we have come up with the 10 highest mountains in the world. Do you know what the number 11 is? Gasherbrum Mountain I , on the border between China and Pakistan, with 8,080 meters.
