Power struggle in Sudan

The Power struggle in Sudan between Sudan’s military and rivals, the Rapid Support Force, has rocked the country, leaving 56 civilians dead. Sudan’s army launched airstrikes on a paramilitary base near the capital in an attempt to reassert control over the country, after clashes left dozens of fighters dead on both sides.

Residents dodged gunfire in the capital, Khartoum, as rival forces battled over the presidential palace, state television and army headquarters.

From these fights, nearly 600 people were injured. Three World Food Program workers were killed after Rapid Support Forces and the army exchanged fire at a military base in Kabkabiya, (KABKABIA) in the west of the country.

Sudan has been ruled by generals since a coup in October 2021. As fighting rages between army units loyal to de facto leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Force, commanded by Sudan’s vice president Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti. (Himed) Hemedti said that his troops would continue to fight until all the bases of the army were captured.

In response, Sudan’s armed forces ruled out negotiations “until the disbandment of paramilitary forces”. The UK, US, EU, China and Russia have called for an immediate end to the fighting. The Secretary General of the UN has spoken to General Burhan and General Dagalo, asking them to end the violence.
