A powerful earthquake hit the southeast of Turkey overnight, on the border with Syria, killing hundreds of people in both countries.

The US Seismological Center said the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale.

Strong tremors were recorded at 04:17 local time. They were 17.9 kilometers deep and epicentered near the city of Gaziantep.

Authorities in Turkey have confirmed the deaths of at least 76 people so far. 10 are the Turkish cities that were affected by this earthquake.

In Syria, the media there report at least 111 dead.

The injured are also hundreds.

The numbers are preliminary and the number of victims may be much higher, as many are suspected to have been trapped under the rubble.

The strong tremors collapsed many buildings and search and rescue teams are working to pull out people trapped underneath.

This Monday’s earthquake is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkey since 1939, when an earthquake of the same magnitude killed 30,000 people.
