Powerful air vortices destroyed hundreds of homes in the west of this federal state. Hardest hit is the town of Rolling Fork. Residents say they have never seen such a situation in these areas.
Witnesses said strong winds also produced golf ball-sized hail and heavy rain.
Tens of thousands of buildings were left without electricity as a result of the damage to the lines. Emergency crews are racing against time to find as many survivors as possible, while thousands of homeless residents have taken shelter in large public halls.
