Scientists in China say they have managed to build a prosecutorial machine, which uses artificial intelligence to raise charges. The system is able to raise a charge with 97% accuracy, if given verbal data of events.
According to experts, the machine was trained using information gathered on more than 17,000 cases from 2015 to 2020 and could correctly file charges for 8 of the most common crimes in Shanghai, including credit card fraud, theft , etc.
Prosecutor AI (Artificial Intelligence) was developed and tested by the prosecution with the largest workload in China. This system works by identifying and filing charges against a suspect based on 1 thousand features derived from the case description made available to him.
According to one of the leading scientists in this project, Shi Yong, the system can be a great help for the daily work of prosecutors and give them more opportunities to focus on important issues.
Yong and his research team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences say the technology is expected to become even more advanced so that in the future it can identify other crimes and file multiple charges against a suspect.
However, skeptics question what will happen if the system makes a mistake: “Who will be held accountable if a mistake is made? The prosecutor, the car or the algorithm designer? ”
